CHILD SAFETY STATEMENT

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Carers,

We could easily get used to these 4 day weeks!  However, I emphasised to the students that we need to work extra hard for those 4 days to make up for lost learning time. I wonder if they took me seriously?

Next week is Catholic Education Week.  The theme this year is "Come and See" John 1:39.  It's a timely message as we enter our enrolment promotion period.  As a Catholic School, we are inclusive of all who wish to "Come and See" what makes our schools, and in particular St Patrick's School, such wonderful and vibrant learning environment.  If you know of anyone looking to enrol their child in 2025, please take the time to share with them the great things that our school community is well known for.  WELCOME; RESPECT; SAFETY; COMMUNITY!

ANZAC DAY - Lest We Forget

Yesterday our school leaders represented our school at the Port Fairy RSL ANZAC Day memorial service.  Thank you to the families who came along to march proudly with us to honour those who died in conflict.  We were very proud of Ruby, Ivy, Sam and Billy for the way they presented themselves at the service.

FROM THE RE LEADER - ELIZA DWYER

CLASSROOM NEWS - YEAR 1

We have had a great start to Term 2 in Year 1!

We have been lucky enough to have some Deakin Pre-Service Teachers visit us to do some science activities.

We have been learning about Floating and Sinking. We investigated things that float and things that sink. We designed our own boats and tested them on the water.

150th ANNIVERSARY - DIOCESE OF BALARAT CELEBRATIONS

The 150th Anniversary of the Ballarat Diocese. There will be a Parish Celebration on Sunday 5th May, 10:30am Mass, St Joseph’s Church.  There will be a gather in St Joseph’s Hall for Brunch following mass.

Come along and enjoy this first Star of the Sea Parish community celebration. Please bring a plate of food to share.

MOYNE ATHLETIC SPORTS

Over 40 of our St Patrick's students represented our school at the Moyne Athletic Sports on Tuesday.  They all did themsleves and our school proud with several wearing winning ribbons on their uniforms by the end of the day.

Congratulations to all who made up the team and to those who will now progress to the Regional Athletics.  Thank you to Mr Greene, Mr Steere, Mr Lucardie, Jess Lambert and Georgina Dumseny for supporting the team on the day.

SCHOOL TV - TRAUMA RECOVERY

When children experience trauma, it profoundly disrupts their sense of safety and normalcy, manifesting in significant emotional and behavioural changes. Exposure to a traumatic event can cause young people to experience stress, anxiety, and potential trauma, particularly when the event receives ongoing media coverage. Parents observing their children struggle with trauma's aftermath often find the experience distressing. To aid recovery, parents can support their child by creating a nurturing environment, thereby helping them regain a sense of security and encouraging resilience. It is crucial for parents to remain actively involved in their child’s healing process, recognising that each child’s response to trauma is unique and requires personalised supportive strategies.

The impact of trauma is unpredictable, and therefore recovery timelines vary widely among young people. Depending on the age of the child, younger children may exhibit regressive behaviours, while older children often show signs of withdrawal and agitation. Parents and carers need to monitor what information their children are accessing and manage their exposure to help minimise emotional distress.

Understanding how trauma affects brain function can help in addressing the psychological aftermath. The brain stores traumatic events as powerful emotional memories, influencing behaviour through mechanisms beyond conscious awareness. For effective trauma management, it is vital for caregivers to recognise the signs of trauma, maintain open communication, and help children differentiate between controllable and uncontrollable aspects of their experiences. By equipping children with coping strategies for dealing with uncertainty, parents can significantly aid their children's ability to overcome trauma and foster long-term emotional resilience.
